On paper heading into Thursday night’s OK3Sports Feature Game, it appeared Burbank may be able to move its winning streak to four games with a victory over Sam Houston at Alamo Stadium. However, it was Sam Houston who did enough to earn its 11th straight victory over the Bulldogs, 20-13.
Within only: 21 seconds ticking off the first quarter clock, Brandon Adams scored on a 1-yard run to give Sam Houston an early lead. Lowe Scott tacked on the two-point conversion, and the Hurricanes were up 8-0 early.
The Hurricanes expanded their lead with 1:50 remaining in the first half as QB Austen Ashworth hooked up with Jonathan Franklin-Ross on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Sam Houston missed the point after, making the score 14-7 at halftime in favor of the HurricanesWith 7:36 remaining in the opening stanza, Burbank QB Julian Basaldua scored on a 2-yard touchdown plunge to bring Burbank to within one at 8-7 following a successful point after attempt.
It was a deadlock for pretty much entire second half. With 1:50 remaining in the game, Ashworth would fire a 20-yard touchdown pass to Scott. A two-point conversion attempt on the ground failed, giving Sam Houston a 20-7 lead.
Basaldua drove the Bulldogs down the field and answered rather quickly, hitting Zackary Gonzalez on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 46 remaining. An onside kick attempt was recovered by Sam Houston, giving the Hurricanes its 11th consecutive victory over Burbank while moving its record to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in District 28-5A.
Both teams will return to action Friday, October 13 as Sam Houston will take on Lanier at Alamo Stadium, while Burbank will take on Edison at the SAISD Sports Complex. Both kickoffs are scheduled for 7::30 PM.
