Ever wondered how big and tall the average college football player is? Have you considered where you stack up next to a D1 linebacker or quarterback? We wondered the same thing.
To find out the measurements for the average college football player by division, we went to the source: college football rosters. We pulled data from all NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA football teams’ rosters for the past five years. Then, we averaged all the heights and weights for each position at all division levels.
What the data say about college football players’ heights and weights
Overall, the average tight end and offensive lineman tend to be the tallest guys on the field. Offensive linemen are typically around 6’1-6’4” while tight ends tend to be around 6’2”-6’4”. The shortest positions go to the running backs, who measure in around 5’9”-5’10”.
The lightest football players are usually the defensive backs, weighing in between 175-189 pounds. The heaviest on the field are the offensive linemen at about 267-297 pounds.
NCAA D1-FBS typically recruits the biggest and tallest players for their position, with athletes usually at least 1 inch taller and 5 lbs. heavier than their counterparts in the other divisions. NCAA D1-FCS and NCAA DII comprise strikingly similar body sizes from one position to the next. See how you compare to the average college football player!
