Saturday morning, at the Alamodome, Wagner exploded for 499 yards, including  487 on the ground to down the Veterans Memorial 54-21 in the Class 5A Division I Regional final to earn their first Class 5A regional title.

Wagner senior Running back Karlton Black led the ground attack, running for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. Sophomore Running back LJ Butler got a pair of rushing touchdowns,  who ran 30 times for 169 yards. Tobias Weaver added 50 yards on 9 carries, Joerell Brown ran three times for 53 yards and Xavier Avery added 44 yards on four carries.

The Thunderbirds defense did the rest, led by DeMarcus Hendricks who had two of the six sacks on the afternoon.

Patriots only scores came through the air, QB Landry Gilpin was 19 of 50 for 314 yards, including three touchdowns connecting twice with Mikey Garcia (28 and 10 yards) and Mike Gonzaque (two-yards).

The Thunderbirds improved to 13-1 and will advance to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals to play the  Pearland Shadow Creek in Houston on December 15, 2018, at 6 pm.
