Wagner was able to pick up its first District 27-6A victory of the season with a 45-16 rout of East Central to round out the 2017 season at D.W. Rutledge Stadium on Friday. The Thunderbirds finished 4-6 on the campaign behind the legs of shifty junior quarterback Tobias Weaver and UTSA commit Spencer Burford-Watts up front.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Thunderbirds exploded for 31 points in the second quarter en route to a 31-2 halftime lead. Weaver rushed for 220 yards and a touchdown, while freshman L.J. Butler added two rushing touchdowns for Wagner. Weaver also hit sophomore Joshua Cobbs on a touchdown pass in the victory.
Weaver finished the season with 1,285 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the season as Wagner finished with a 4-6 mark. Seniors only accounted for five touches in the victory for the Thunderbirds, who will bring an experienced team into the 2018 season behind Weaver. Junior Karlton Black and Butler both rushed for 500 yards this season. Cobbs will return as the leading receiver, accounting for over half of Wagner’s receiving yards on the season.
East Central, who finished 0-10 on the season, gained experience with a young roster, playing a freshman quarterback the majority of the season.
