Taft 36, Legacy of Educational Excellence 21

New head coach Ricky Stade got off to a winning start as Taft rushed for 392 yards on 51 carries in a 36-21 season-opening win over LEE on Friday night at Gustafson Stadium.

Stade, who was the defensive coordinator at O’Connor last season as the Panthers finished 13-1 and advanced to the Region IV final, saw his new defensive unit pitch a shutout over three quarters en route to a 29-0 lead.

Running back Divonne Tilden rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Raiders, while Diego Martinez added another 100 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries for the Raiders. Both of Tilden’s rushing scores came in the third quarter as Taft expanded its 9-0 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, 250-pound senior quarterback Stephen Canto found Stacy Woodard on a pair of touchdown passes to get the Volunteers on the scoreboard. Woodard is one of the top defensive backs in the city that nobody has heard of with college interest from FCS programs. Woodard finished with 101 receiving yards on four grabs.

Taft held LEE to 90 rushing yards on 33 carries and was able to control the tempo with its running game.

The Raiders will take on Marshall on Saturday, September 8 at Farris Stadium. Marshall pulled one of the biggest surprises in Week 1 with a 35-20 victory over MacArthur. LEE will host Brackenridge at Heroes Stadium on Saturday as both programs look for their first win of the new season. Brackenridge fell to Somerset 55-39 on Friday night.
