Battle of 3009
Cibolo Steele 21, Schertz Clemens 7
In a knock-down, drag-out backyard brawl, No. 4 Cibolo Steele claimed its ninth straight victory over No. 6 Schertz Clemens in the Battle of 3009 at Lehnhoff Stadium on Friday night, 21-7.
Sophomore signal caller Wyatt Begeal hit elite-level junior Daniel Jackson on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter to give the Knights an early 7-0 lead.
Fellow sophomore Max Didomenico tied the score with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Zachary Morales.
In the second quarter, Begeal would cap-off the scoring for the evening with his feet. Begeal’s touchdown runs of 13 and 2 yards, respectively, would put the game away for Steele.
Begeal finished 6-of-7 through the air for 101 yards and the touchdown to Jackson and added 48 yards on the ground. Senior Robert Collins rushed for 113 tough yards for Steele (3-2 and 1-1 in District 26-6A), who lost junior FBS prospect De’Quavion Thomas to a lower leg injury. Tyrin Smith caught five passes for 59 yards to lead the Steele receivers.
For Clemens (3-2 and 1-1 in 26-6A), Didomenico rushed for 92 yards on 21 carries, while senior running back Jaray Patterson added 50 rushing yards against a stingy Steele defensive unit.
