Reagan erased a 9-point deficit at intermission, embarking on a second-half comeback to down Brennan 24-22 at Comalander Stadium on Saturday in the 2018 season opener for both squads.

The Rattlers denied a two-point conversion attempt with 3:37 remaining in the game to hold off Brennan. Brennan answered for the final time when Javon Grimes reached paydirt on a 4-yard run, setting up the decisive two-point attempt. Reagan held firm, squeaking by with the victory.

In the third quarter, while trailing 16-7, Reagan’s Hunter Chung recovered a fumble for a touchdown to bring the deficit to two points for the Rattlers. Reagan would take the lead 17-16 with 7:52 left in the game when Steven Opella drilled a 26-yard field goal.

Austin Miller extended the lead with 4:31 remaining with a 17-yard touchdown run to give Reagan an eight-point lead following Opella’s successful point after before Brennan’s late rally.

Reagan was led by Travis Sthele and Konner Fox on offense. The two hooked up on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to get the Rattlers on the board. Fox would finish with five receptions for 81 yards to lead the Reagan receivers.

For Brennan, quarterback Jordan Flores tossed two touchdown strikes, while Jordan Smith caught six passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.

In Week 2, Reagan will host Cibolo Steele at Heroes Stadium after the Knights dropped their opener to O’Connor, 21-14. Meanwhile, the Bears will get to work in District 28-6A play when they host Warren on Friday at Gustafson Stadium. Warren claimed a 45-7 victory on Saturday night over Del Rio.
