Any District 28-6A Zone B victory is crucial, but No. 2 O’Connor struggled with a Warren team who fell to 2-4 on the season with Saturday night’s 27-23 loss to one of the best teams in the Alamo city.

Perhaps you can forgive O’Connor for what appears to be a night off on paper, but full credit must go to Warren for giving the Panthers all they could handle. The leader of the pesky Warren team is QB BJ Greene, who continues to put up solid numbers this season. Greene’s 51 yards run with 6:58 left in the first quarter answered an early Roel Sanchez TD run to tie the game at seven. Kyle Elderbooted a 34-yard field goal to give Warren a 10-7 lead after the first quarter.

It appeared O’Connor took control of the game in the third quarter. A 37-yard touchdown run by Sanchez broke the deadlock, and Millard Bradford’s 35-yard pick six with 1:34 left in the third quarter gave O’Connor a 14-0 lead.In the second quarter, O’Connor could only muster a game-tying field goal by Michael Lyssy. At halftime, the 10-10 tie raised some eyebrows around the city.

Warren would cut the lead to 24-17 with 10:41 remaining in the game before Lyssy would add another field goal, this time from 34 yards to give O’Connor a 27-17 lead with 3:46 remaining.

Greene and the Warriors offense would not go away. Greene would hit Quinton Starks on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 1:28 remaining, but the ensuing onside kick attempt failed to give O’Connor a closer than expected victory.

O’Connor will take an off week in Week 7 and will face Stevens (2-4) coming out of the bye week. Warren will face Stevens this Friday at Farris Stadium.
