O’Connor 14, Warren 7

In a defensive battle on Thursday Night Lights, Grant Rustan returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown with 9:46 remaining in the game as No. 2 O’Connor survived a huge District 28-6A test by squeaking past No. 10 Warren, 14-7.

O’Connor defense gave up 111 total yards and did not allow an offensive point from the Warriors all evening long as the Panthers extended their district winning streak to 14 games.

Junior running back Zion Taylor rushed for 152 yards to lead the Panthers, including a huge 60-yard run to set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from David Dodd to Chase Locke as time expired in the first half to tie the game at seven heading into intermission.

Warren’s defense was equally as impressive. Junior defensive end D’Angelo Ortiz opened the scoring with a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter to open the scoring. The Warriors would hold Dodd to 6 of 24 passing for 71 yards and two interceptions.

Senior defensive lineman Caleb Williams, a prospect who has garnered some FBS interest in the past, put in a dominating performance for Warren. Williams put constant pressure on Dodd all evening long and added an interception after tipping Dodd’s pass to himself in the second quarter.

O’Connor (3-0, 2-0 in 28-6A) will take on Jacob Zeno and Jay on Friday night at Farris Stadium, while Warren will take on Holmes at Gustafson Stadium on Saturday.
