MacArthur broke away from a tight battle with Roosevelt on Saturday night, scoring 25 fourth-quarter points in a 56-27 victory to even its record in District 26-6A and retain its postseason hopes in a game televised on Gran Network TV and featured by OK3Sports.com.
Quarterback Tyler Vitt remained in contention for All-City honors with another solid performance, completing 12 of 15 passes for 150 yards and three first-half touchdown strikes while picking up another 106 yards and a score on the ground for the Brahmas (3-5, 2-2). MacArthur has lost all five games this season to teams ranked in the 210 Elevenrankings in 6A.
Senior running back Chase McDaniel rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns while Justin Smith added a late 34-yard touchdown run for the Brahmas.
Entering the final stanza, MacArthur was in a tight battle clinging to a 31-25 lead. McDaniel would rush for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as MacArthur began to pull away from Roosevelt (2-5 and 0-3).
With 6:33 remaining in the third quarter, the Rough Riders grabbed a 25-24 lead when quarterback Carlos Garibay hit Rashad Owens on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 6:33 left in the third quarter.
Garibay threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns for a Rough Rider team that has had some offensive success this season, while the signal caller also would rush for a touchdown run to give Roosevelt a 9-7 lead with 8:46 remaining in the second quarter.
Darlington Baddal would hook up with Garibay to open the scoring with 9:36 remaining in the first quarter on a 64-yard touchdown pass to give Roosevelt an early 6-0 lead.
MacArthur will finish its regular season with Churchill and L.E.E. and could be in line for a playoff berth, sitting behind Madison in fourth place in the district. A victory over against a struggling Churchill squad on Friday at Comalander Stadium will go a long way to determining MacArthur’s postseason fate.
