OK3Sports Football: Brandeis Broncos vs Johnson Jaguars
In his varsity debut, sophomore dual-threat quarterback Jordan Battles rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns as Brandeis defeated Johnson in the season opener for both teams, 35-17.
Johnson led 14-7 after the first quarter, using a 1-yard touchdown run by Justin Rodriguez and a 96-yard kickoff return by Jacob Desmarais.
Battles got the Broncos on the scoreboard with a 23-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven with seven ticks remaining in the first quarter before Desmarais took his kickoff back to the house.
In the second stanza, Harvard linebacker commit Brent Malone plunged in from 1-yard out to get to tie the game at 14 following the point after by Xavier Lopez.
Johnson’s Brody Patty responded by drilling a 52-yard field goal as the Jaguars led by three at intermission. Patty is considered one of the top kickers in San Antonio in what is a strong 2019 class.
From there, it was all Brandeis. Battles reached the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown scamper with 9:48 to give the Broncos a lead they would never relinquish. Later in the third, Battles hit Oscar Cardenas on a 16-yard touchdown strike.
Battles is one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2021 in the area, joining Harlan’s Kannon Williams, Cibolo Steele’s Wyatt Begeal, Converse Judson’s Lucas Coley, and Cornerstone Christian’s General Booty.
Austin Garcia capped off the scoring with a 40-yard interception return for a score, which was one of his two interceptions on the evening. Brandeis held Johnson to 2-of-13 passing for 50 yards.
Brandeis will get to work in District 28-6A play with a battle with Stevens on Thursday. Stevens opened its season with a 21-7 victory over Boerne Champion. Johnson will travel to San Marcos on Friday evening. San Marcos fell in its season opener to Buda Hays, 21-10.
