In what is considered an eye-opening result by those not within the Stevens program, the Falcons opened their 2018 campaign with a 21-7 victory over local 5A powerhouse Boerne Champion on Thursday evening.

In the first quarter, new Champion quarterback Luke Boyers struck key receiving returnee Konner Beavers on a 26-yard touchdown strike to claim an early lead with just under eight minutes left in the opening stanza. It would be the only points the Chargers would score on the night.

Stevens quarterback Josh Ramirez went to work in the second quarter, scoring on a 23-yard touchdown scamper and finding Joshua Gonzalez on a 6-yard touchdown strike as the Falcons claimed a 14-7 lead at intermission. Gonzalez, who broke through on varsity as a freshman late in the season, is considered one of the top defensive linemen in the Class of 2021 in San Antonio.

Just before the third quarter ended, Joshua Lopez put the game away with a 55-yard touchdown run. Despite losing the yardage battle to Champion by more than 120 yards, the Falcons were able to capitalize on three turnovers to claim the victory.

Boerne Champion running back Tamari Jenkins led the Chargers with 113 yards on 19 carries. Beavers caught a pair of passes totaling 81 yards to pace Boerne Champion. (By @shansentx210)

Next week, Stevens take on Brandeis at 7:00 PM. As for Boerne-Champion, they will face off against Veterans Memorial.

The Falcons defeated the Chargers  21-7.
