Texas High School Football – Lanier can’t get by Burbank

The stakes are high in this rivalry District 13 5A-1 matchup as the winner of this game will make it to the playoffs. 

The Bulldogs were first to get on the board by #12 Kaleb Hernandez with a good extra point kick 7-0 in the first quarter. Lanier #88 Malachi Apreciado catches a 68 yard pass down the sidelines and steps in for a Voks TD 7-7 with 2:47 left in the first. 

The Voks continue the pressure with a 33 yard TD by #10 Marcos Almendares 14-7 in the second quarter. 

Third quarter, Burbank has a 3 play 80 yard drive to get #9 Mathew Salazar into the end zone 14-14 with 5:40 left in the third. Lanier gets the lead back with a 66 yard drive capped off with a Voks TD by #2 Fabian Maciel 21-14. Angel Apreciado #11 picks an interception for the Voks with 19 seconds left in the third. However, on the very next play the Bulldogs answers that interception with one of their own by #1 Jacob Korrodi.

The interceptions continue with a pass picked off by Voks #4 Andrew Pena who runs 93 yards TD returning the lead to Lanier. The extra point sails wide right and is no good 27-14 Voks with 6:43 left to play. 

Burbank adds another TD by #5 BJ Garcia 27-21 Voks.

With only 10 second left to play #10 Juan Urbiola of the Bulldogs bites back with a touchdown. This ties the game at 27 each but Burbank still has the extra point attempt which is good giving them the win 28-27.

Burbank (6-4 overall) enters the playoffs and will face Harlan Hawks (10-0) in round 1.
